On 24 May four Belgian girls, Marlies Strubbe, Aline Erauw, Line Mapessa and Zoé Tiberghien (pictured right), will run the Fisherman’s Friend Strongman Run in Antwerp. More than a run, this is a tough obstacle course which includes climbing over wooden structures and crawling through the mud.The group of friends will take part in this race to highlight the lives
of girls in Benin who have to overcome obstacles daily, from child marriage to teenage pregnancy and dropping out of school early. The girls raise funds for Girl Power in Benin via an online crowdfunding platform, then cover one metre of the course for each euro that they will raise. Girl Power is a project set up by Plan Belgium in July 2015 to support girls in Benin. Nearly 280 youth from the Atacora region are guided through sporting activities to increase their self-confidence. They also attend workshops where they are taught to defend
themselves and to respect their rights. Brussels Airlines further sponsored the girls’ flights when they visited the Beninese girls under the Girl Power programme. Brussels Airlines also supports a similar Plan Belgium project ‘Together We Care’, which is funded by Brussels Airlines employees.
